Grip
sizes
Adult tennis racquet grip sizes range from 4 1/8" to
4 5/8" and increase in size by 1/8" at a time. A
tennis racquets grip size is usually shown on the butt cap
of the handle and is displayed in one of two ways:
US system - full grip size in inches i.e. 4 3/8"
or
European system - a numerical value from 1 to 5, which equals
the 'number of eights of an inch' i.e.
G1 = 4 1/8"
G2 = 4 2/8" (4¼")
G3 = 4 3/8"
G4 = 4 4/8" (4½")
G5 = 4 5/8"
Selecting the correct tennis racquet grip size will not only
help your game but will also help you avoid injury, you should
be able to grip the racquet handle comfortably without over
squeezing. A grip that is too small requires more muscle strength
to keep the racquet from twisting in your hand and can lead
to problems with tennis elbow. A grip that is too large inhibits
wrist snap on serves, makes changing grips more difficult
and also requires more muscle strength, this too can lead
to tennis elbow and wrist injuries.
Measuring your grip size
The easiest way to measure your tennis racquet grip size is
by holding the tennis racquet handle with an eastern forehand
grip (the palm should be placed against the same bevel as
the string face), if the tennis racquet is your correct grip
size you should be able to fit the indexfinger of your other
hand in the space between your ring finger and palm. (see
